"Scientists say new "Dark Plasma" solar storm will knock out all radio, TV and internet starting the evening of November 5th and lasting about two days"

NASA detects "Dark Plasma" ready to erupt from sun, warns radio & TV will be knocked out for two days

NASA has detected a new kind of "dark plasma" on the surface of the sun.  Pools of this plasma build up on the surface and are eventually shot into space like normal, better-known solar flares.  An eruption at the wrong time could temporarily knock out radio, TV and satellite links on Earth.

The ‘cold’ solar flare is approximately one quarter of the temperature of the sun’s ‘warm’ solar flares, which are much better understood by scientists.  A small one happened this week, but NASA satellites say the next one--much larger--is likely to happen the evening of November 5th.  Such "dark plasma flares" have the potential to disrupt radio, aviation communication, and satellite operations when they reach Earth.

So-called ‘cold’ solar flares have only been the subject of serious study by astrophysicists in the past decade.  One study says they produce “higher peak frequencies of gyrosynchrotron emission,” the exact form of radiation responsible for a flare’s intense and disruptive radio emissions.

We asked NASA's Dr. Auntohni Fao-Chi to explain what a "gyrosynchrotron emission" is but he just laughed and said "Unless you're a PhD you wouldn't understand."

He warned that the Earth will see increasingly severe solar storms over the next four years--beginning with the big one the first week of November.  While the exact cause is still being studied, he said it's likely because of global warming, which "amplifies the gyrosynchrotron emissions."
