IRS awards lucrative "non-profit" status to drug shooting galleries, defying their stated rules
I keep thinking "This could not *possibly* get any worse!" But of course then it promptly does.
In the Democrat-ruled cesspool of Philadelphia a leftist cesspool called "Safehouse" wants to open a facility where addicts can use drugs under ‘supervision’. This is a very popular idea with leftists, who claim injecting heroin or meth or fentanyl or whatever is no different from diabetics or someone with cancer or high blood pressure! The Left bleats that all those conditions are totally equivalent--people with "diseases" getting "treatment."
Philly's utterly corrupt Dem mayor Jim Kenney argues “We don’t question the fact that people go for treatment for these diseases.”
Of course the huge difference is that with drug users NO treatment is occurring, just endless use. But the Left doesn't think many people will notice that critical difference, cuz the argument sounds SO totally plausible, eh?
Leftists and Democrats have been pushing so-called "safe injection sites" for a decade or so, but have a small problem: Federal law--the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986--makes it a crime to “knowingly open" any place for using any controlled substance.
Of course it's long been obvious that mere "laws" don't apply to the Left when leftists want to do...well, anything.
The city council disagreed with the claim that injecting heroin was just like diabetics getting insulin, so council voted 13 to 1 to ban the left from opening any "safe injection" houses.
And of course there's that silly "federal law" thing. But the Left knows they don't need congress to repeal it to get what the Left clearly wants. All that's needed is to get some Democrat judge to RULE that the part of that federal law banning cities from opening "safe injection sites" is unconstitutional.
And right on cue, the Leftists are arguing in federal court that operating an injection site is really protected under the First Amendment's "freedom of religion."
Seriously.
And you can tell from the garland regime's response that they're about to agree, as garland's "justice department" responded “There are many ways for [users] to exercise their broadly stated religious beliefs that do not involve maintaining a facility for individuals to consume drugs.”
For the slow-witted, pointing out to the Left that there are lots of alternatives isn't a persuasive argument. They want what they want, and nothing else will ever do.
An even more amusing sign of the corruption is that even though the goal of Safehouse is against federal law, the organization has somehow received lucrative non-profit status from the corrupt IRS, so can accept tax-deductible donations from drug dealers and Mexican--even though its sole stated purpose is illegal!
Now, federal tax regulations state that “exempt purposes may generally be equated with the public good, and violations of law are the antithesis of the public good,” and that “violation of constitutionally valid laws *is inconsistent with* non-profit status. And that “planned activities that violate laws are not in furtherance of a charitable purpose.”
And yet the Leftist organization pushing to violate federal law got coveted non-profit status *anyway.* Can anyone explain that?
Clearly the IRS has ignored its own regulations. Would it do this for a conservative group? Of course not.
Safehouse received non-profit designation in 2019, and the organization quickly used that fact to claim that its "activities" had been approved of by a branch of the federal government. Safehouse's VP argued “It is important for the court to know that a federal agency has looked at this activity and determined that it’s lawful.”
Of course that's not even remotely true. The IRS simply ignored its own regulations to allow the Left to rake in big tax-deductible donations.
And since the IRS provided it with tax-exempt status, Safehouse has taken in over half a million dollars. Who at the IRS signed off on giving an organization wanting to open a "shooting gallery" tax-exempt status, eh?
Tellingly, Safehouse is not the only "shooting gallery" the IRS has given tax-exempt status. In New York City an insider organization called "OnPoint" operates two “supervised injection sites” where addicts shoot up heroin. Users can get new needles and hot towels that “really bring those veins up.”
The organization that operates these two facilities has also gotten coveted non-profit status from the IRS. Again, the IRS has apparently decided an activity against federal law somehow qualifies for tax-exempt status.
And how has that worked for the Leftists who started OnPoint? In 2021 they took in $2.6 million in 2021 and $3.8 million in 2020.
Even Damian Williams, a Biden appointee and the first black US Attorney for the southern district of New York, made it very clear that OnPoint’s operations are illegal.
“That is unacceptable,” he warned. “My office is prepared to exercise all options—including enforcement—if this situation doesn't change in short order.”
"If this situation doesn't change"?? The regime has already signaled that it's delighted with this illegality, so the posturing by Damian Williams is just that.
The IRS has chosen to continue treating OnPoint as legal, in defiance of their own regulations. And no one seems fazed.
In Rhode Island yet another tax-exempt shooting gallery is about to open. The bleat is dat users can shoot up "under the supervision of trained staff.”
In 2021 the operating organization took in $1.68 million. It’s the third example of the IRS allowing shooting galleries being given non-profit status while violating federal law.
Starting to see a pattern yet?
Notably, the IRS has refused to make its internal determinations public.
While parts of the government are waging a war on drugs, the IRS is waging a war for drugs. The unelected, un-fireable, unaccountable Deep State is out of control--with the full support of the biden regime.
