Wow, no one could possibly have predicted THIS, eh? Germany re-starting shuttered coal-fired powerplants

With Germany having shut down half of its perfectly operating nuclear powerplants to satisfy the snowflake greens, and then having had Russia halt sales of natural gas to Germany after that country joined other EU nations in opposing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Germany finds itself...wait for it...short of electricity!

Democrats: "Why, that's impossible!  Electricity comes from wind and solar and unicorns!  What does natural gas have to do with electricity?  This is just a Rethuglican scare story!

Really, sparky?

And because the German government ordered the shutdown of working nuclear plants, Germany's chancellor, Olaf Scholz, says his country will now be forced to...wait for it...reactivate coal and oil-fired power plants to satisfy the demand for electricity.

Scholz expressed regret over "Germany’s decision" (i.e. his government's decision) to re-start 16 mothballed coal-fired power plants to reduce gas use now, to increase gas storage for use this winter. amid fears of further cuts in natural gas supplies from Russia.

He then went on to blame the war in Ukraine--though pointedly NOT naming Vladimir Putin for invading that nation--and promised the return to burning coal "is only temporary."

“It's unfortunate that because of Russia’s brutal attack on Ukraine we now have to temporarily use some power plants that we had previously taken out of operation,” he said. “But it is only for a very short time.”

Scholz insisted that Germany remains committed to totally ending its greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 — the earliest of any major industrialized nation.  He noted a recent "package of measures" approved by parliament to boost renewable energy.  He said since wind and solar didn't always produce the rated amounts of energy, that would normally require nuclear power to be on standby. Unfortunately the Greens have objected to nuclear because, reasons, so the only remaining option is to start building giant dams across valleys since hydroelectric power is its own storage.

Unfortunately every valley in Germany is inhabited by tens of thousands of people, but Scholz insisted all good citizens would be happy to move to "save the planet from Global Warming," which he called a huge threat to human life.

Democrats: "Hydropower gud.  We're sure good German citizens will be happy to move.  Wait...someone said dams are made of concrete, and that it takes LOTS of energy to produce cement, which someone else said is part of concrete.  So wouldn't building dams ALSO cause more 'carbon emissions?'  Maybe we should put more money into unicorn research.  Yes.  Let's give Hahvahd a $100 million grant."
