Visit lovely Portland. No, the other Portland, in Maine. Which has its own drug problems

Portland, Maine.  It's the state capital.  For the past four years the governor has been Democrat Janet Mills.

Druggies and mentally ill--and druggies--are camped out all over the city, discarding needle-tipped syringes everywhere, and Mills and city officials are blaming each other for not solving the problem.

One business owner who's next to a "camp" said cops weren't arresting drug users because the city refused to prosecute.  So can you predict what happened next?

Sure you can: police have stopped bothering with arrests, cuz there's no point.

Comes now a city employee, Jessica Grondin, who holds the vital post of director of communications for the city.  Her bosses have sent her out to tell business owners that everything's fine and they're just raaaccists or something.

“We have (a) been in communication with business owners, and (b) have let them know about our *Encampment Crisis Response Team* and what faaabulous work they're doing," Grondin said in a written statement.

“We’ve (c) been in communication with anyone who has reached out, and (d) have also shared information with the [Chamber of Commerce],” she said.

Business owners were puzzled.  "None of that has done a thing to solve the problem," said one.  You say you "communicate" and "share information," but there's no actual corrective action."

"It's like you morons hope just talking will fool people into thinking you and the state are doing something--like maybe have city workers clean up the needles and feces on the sidewalk in front of businesses, eh?"

"Oh no," said Grodin.  "The city is not responsible for needles or feces on business owners’ property.  The city isn't able to 'assist' with any clean-up on private property.  That's your problem."

"Ah, but if we use muscle to chase the druggies off, the mayor has the cops arrest US for assault.  So our hands are tied."

"That's not our problem," said Grodin.  “While we’re not able to [i.e. refuse to] clean up needles and trash on private property, we *are* providing regular trash removal for the campers at the Park and Ride location,” she said.  "But your property is your problem."

SO...it's good to know that the enlightened Democrats of Portland have their homeless problem under control, eh?
