With help of "experts," California "reparations commission" sets a dollar figure to pay all blacks
California explicitly outlawed slavery when it joined the Union in 1850, and was designated a "free" state when it joined the Union. Nevertheless, since the entire government of the state is run by members of the Democrat party, the state is one of several debating the possibility of forcing taxpayers to pay "reparations" to black Americans whose ancestors were slaves--even though California was never a slave state.
So the Democrats in California established a state "commission" to come up with a dollar amount, and how it would be paid, and who would get the windfall. The commission--almost entirely composed of blacks--brought in alleged "economic experts" to recommend a dollar amount.
And they came up with...paying $1.2 million to every black resident who'd been in the state more than a few years. The commission had held numerous open hearings where blacks were invited to suggest a dollar amount, with some witnesses suggesting as much as $200 million per person. Others demanded free homes.
Now all that remains is for voters to approve paying reparations in a statewide vote. Governor Newsom said he was confident the measure would pass, since that's the core of "democracy." But he said in the highly unlikely case it didn't, he'd urge the state assembly to pass it as a law, which he said he'd quickly sign--because that's the core of democracy.
A survey of Democrat voters found most were really enthusiastic about the idea, especially after governor Newsom said that if he was elected president, as is widely expected, he'd order the cost to be paid by the federal government. GOP senators and congressmen said that hasn't been discussed, but they were open to ideas.
When Democrat survey respondents were told that since only half of state residents pay income tax, the plan would cost the average working family about $300,000, they were reportedly less enthusiastic about the measure, although exact figures were not released.
Initially the folks getting the cash would have had to prove they had an ancestor who was a slave, but the commission thought that would be too divisive and burdensome, so as of now they've backed off on that requirement.
As it happens, removing that condition would also win more votes when this comes to a statewide vote. But that's merely coincidence.
Another item still up in the air is whether recipients would have to have more than a certain number of black great-great-grandparents to qualifiy. But like requiring that recipients prove they had slave ancestors, the commission decided this was too burdensome, so this condition too is on hold.
As it happens, removing this condition would also win more statewide votes. But again, this is simply coincidence.
Detroit has set up another commission to study reparations. Senior policy director Kofi Kenyatta told the commission "Reparations must include, no strings attached, direct cash to Black people."
In other news, a group of 12-year-olds, sponsored and advised by the ACLU, has demanded that everyone in the U.S. under 14 years old be given a Corvette and an electric hoverboard, and be allowed to drive if at least ten years old, because deficit spending by earlier generations will cost them billions in interest. A panel of legal experts agreed that it wasn't fair that young people be saddled with the massive debt because they weren't alive to benefit from the prior spending and thus could not object. The experts agreed this was a form of "involuntary servitude."
When one adult complained that the group's demand was ridiculous, an ACLU attorney smiled and replied, "Does that make it any less valid?"
