Ban guns? Perish the thought! We'll just make it prohibitively difficult to buy one
As I've noted previously, just last month Democrats won total control of Virginia's legislature, and since the governor is already a Dem, the Dems immediately drafted bills to drastically change the rules for owning firearms in that state.
Of course you almost certainly don't live in Virgina, so why is this any concern to you?
Because what the Dems are doing there is the pattern for national nullification of your right to own firearms, seemingly guaranteed by the clear and unambiguous language of Second Amendment to our Constitution.
Democrat politicians know that while Leftists routinely ignore laws they don't like, most conservatives tend to obey laws even when a law works against their interest. The thinking is that instead of simply violating a burdensome or unconstitutional law, one should try to get it changed--but while doing so, obey it.
Unfortunately for conservatives there are hundreds of ways for anti-gun pols to nibble away at gun ownership. For example, states can levy taxes on whatever they wish. So Dems could impose a significant tax (in addition to the normal sales tax) on weapons and ammunition. Dems in California have already proposed this.
They can also force would-be buyers of weapons to fill out volumes of paperwork to be able to buy a gun. An anti-gun legislature could demand that applicants include copies of all writings or internet posts that could be used by anti-gun Dem judges to show that the applicant was a critic of any level of government, and thus theoretically pose a risk of going postal. Getting permission from a Dem-ruled state government to buy a firearm could take months.
State governments have also passed laws allowing them to seize firearms from anyone a state agency deems to pose a risk. It's called a "red-flag law." Florida. Google it.
How about an "annual registration fee" of, say, $100 per year? Or a state could call it an "inspection fee" to ensure the firearm complied with outrageous storage requirements. What right-minded citizen could possibly object to a "public safety fee" eh?
It'll be interesting to see if Virginia's legislators will follow through with their proposed laws.
