Great Democrat ideas
As many of you have probably noticed, once the Left latches onto some goofy idea they never give up on it, even after it's been repeatedly shown to fail at whatever the stated goal was.
For example, if you're old enough you may recall a Dem-pushed program called "midnight basketball." The claim by Dem pols was that "young men" didn't go out robbing and killing because dey wuz bad, but cuz dey jus' din' have nuffin' else to DO.
Seriously. So robberies and murders were really your fault, citizen! But for a just few hundred million dollars or so--almost nuffin'--Dems could fix this, by putting lights on basketball courts, to give deez bored young men something else to do.
So almost every Dem-ruled city got federal money (i.e. taxpayer dollars) to put up lights on bakkabaw courts.
And just as the Dems predicted, crime by young males plummeted.
Just kidding.
Inspired by this huge success, Dem-ruled cities looked for other ways crime could be reduced without having to, y'know, arrest, try and jail offenders. Dem-ruled Minneapolis led the way, by announcing that city cops would no longer arrest anyone for selling illegal drugs. Oregon went that one better by legalizing ALL recreational drugs for two years.
And as the Dems predicted, in both states drug crimes disappeared.
Amazing, eh?
California's Dem-ruled Assembly allowed a "ballot measure" to be approved, saying anyone who stole less than $950 worth of goods in one trip would no longer be charged with a felony, but instead would be given the equivalent of a parking ticket.
And again the Democrats were right: the number of thefts reported by businesses dropped--since business owners quickly realized no action was ever taken to prosecute and recover stolen goods.
This response by politicians is, of course, absurd. But Democrat pols have found their voters love it.
The sequence is always the same:
1. When a type of crime committed by "favored groups" becomes widespread, 'Democrats declare that prosecuting that crime is racist, classist or whatever.
2. As that crime becomes more widespread, Dem pols propose to change city or state law or just "policy" so that the crime is now officially ignored.
3. Democrats declare victory.
Thus dozens of big Dem-ruled cities now spend tax dollars to give "free" syringes to I-V drug users. Of course instead of calling the plans "free syringes" they always call the programs "needle exchanges." Of course that's nonsense: users don't exchange anything, because admitting you're spending tax dollars to give junkies free needles doesn't play well with normals.
But that's just the start: now Dem-ruled cities are proposing taxpayer-funded "shooting galleries" where junkies can get high in total comfort and safety. Taxpayer-funded nurses will be there around the clock in case of overdoses.
This is another iteration of the same basic premise as all the other Dem ideas: By giving junkies a safe place to shoot up, Dems say, your kids will be less likely to find used and dropped needles on beaches or in parks.
Of course even with needle "exchanges" and shooting galleries, needles still litter the sidewalks and junkies still shoot up in parks--because they know they won't be arrested, prosecuted and imprisoned or otherwise institutionalized.
Junkies don't take the time to go to the city-run "safe house" to shoot up, they just want to shoot up now. Violent teenagers and young adults don't take to the streets and beat people up and destroy property because they're bored and lack places to socialize, they assault and rob and kill because they want to--but also because they know they won't be arrested or prosecuted or imprisoned.
As should be obvious, legalizing crime or refusing to prosecute it doesn't make it go away. Needle "exchanges" don't reduce drug use. Neither did "midnight basketball."
None of these ideas doesn't work. Never has and ever will. But the Left will never stop trying new versions. So long as there are protected groups the Left wishes to insulate from consequences for crime, some form of this idea will always resurface. It's as predictable as the sunrise.
