Gavin Newsom spent $189 million tax dollars to give inmates free "digital tablets" they're using to view porn

(And later: Minnesota House fraud report claims Walz helped facilitate the massive fraud there)

Chris Rufo reports that Cali governor Gavin Newsom has dismantled San Quentin prison's death row and turned the prison into a therapy center, with art, classrooms, a café and podcast studios.

Cuz prison inmates need to be able to do podcasts!  Cuz dat's a "basic human right," eh?

As part of this wokie push, the Newsom administration signed a $189 million contract to provide free digital tablets--generic versions of iPads--to every inmate in the state prison system.

The administration claimed this was "a step toward digital equity for justice-impacted individuals."  The Narrative was that inmates could use the devices to contact their families, "access educational content" and "learn new technology."

But Rufo's organization contacted dozens of death-row inmates who said inmates are actually using the free iPad knockoffs to watch pornography and have explicit sexual conversations.  Some top corrections officials say inmates are using the things to groom minors.

The state claims inmates can't access porn, but inmates told City Journal that users can easily evade detection.

Asked to comment, the state Department of Corrections replied with pious boilerplate, claiming the tablets were "tightly controlled" and "education tools" that provided inmates with "access to the Bible, education, and reentry resources that actually reduce crime."

Standard political bullshit Narrative.  "We've got Procedures that prevent all the things you claim."

But one inmate said the Newsom regime is lying to voters and taxpayers.

Newsome has put a "moratorium" on the death penalty--ending it without a vote--so the phrase "death row" is just a lie to keep conservatives from revolting.  But one inmate on the former death row--Robert Maury--says he's used his taxpayer-funded iPad knockoff to view porn. Maury told Rufo inmates can receive nude pictures from women and watch pornography through their devices.

And if the $189 million waste didn't faze ya: The state's new contract with the vendor of the devices allows for four one-year extensions, which could push its total cost to $315 million.

Wokie state governments: bullet-trains to nowhere and free computers for every inmate.

Now to Minnesota: State report on the $9 BILLION fraud doesn't blame Dems but just a 'culture of tolerance.'

The Minnesota legislature is Democrat-ruled, so you'd expect it to avoid blaming the Dem-ruled government for any role in failing to detect or stop the massive fraud in "providing free meals," free housing, fake "child-care" centers and fake "autism treatment" clinics.  And as expected, the report released by the legislative committee investigating fraud doesn't blame anyone, but rather "a culture of tolerance" under Gov. Tim Walz that it says allowed thousands of fraudsters to fleece taxpayers for billions of dollars.

The report claims state government malfeasance, incompetence and the active suppression of whistleblower warnings.

Latest estimates are that up to $9 billion has been stolen in Medicaid fraud alone.  The report claims the total amount stolen across multiple programs, including food stamps ("SNAP") is significantly higher than previously believed.

In one case Walz blamed his failure to act to stop a known and ongoing fraud on a state judge Walz claims ordered the state to resume payments to fraudsters.  But the judge in that case says he never ordered the state to resume payments, and that the Walz administration did so without prompting.  Someone is clearly lying.  Seems like the written court record would easily show whether the judge issued such an order, but the report avoids digging into that.

Investigators described a recurring "business model" used by fraudsters, involving low barriers to entry, the use of shell companies and the payment of kickbacks to enroll recipients.

The report claims Democrat Walz created a culture that enabled fraud by failing to hold officials accountable despite years of credible whistleblower reports and audits. It claims the administration "ignored and consciously downplayed" shocking levels of fraud across more than a dozen Medicaid waiver programs, but then gave away the store by concluding that the Democrat regime "prioritized compassion over compliance."

For those who didn't get it: every liberal and Democrat will applaud "prioritizing compassion," meaning no damage to the Democrat brand from failing to prevent fraud.

Republicans on the committee were constantly opposed by Democrats, including earlier this month when Democrats on the committee blocked an effort to subpoena Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar for information on her alleged ties to the convicted fraudsters in the Somali community.
