"Vigilante Justice Rises in Haiti and Crime Plummets"
Rising crime in the U.S. is beginning to threaten enough people to force change. Here's how citizens of one corrupt, crime-ridden shit-hole have responded:
Gangs have run Haiti for decades. The cops are totally corrupt. The last president was assassinated, presumably by gangs that realized he might reform the cops. Last July the small country had 470 murders in just nine days.
On April 24th that may have changed: As 14 presumed gang members under arrest were arriving at a police station in Haiti’s capital, a group of people overpowered the police, surrounded the suspects outside, beat them and then used gasoline-filled tires to burn them alive.
The executions marked the start of a deadly vigilante campaign to reclaim the streets of the capital from gangs that have terrorized peaceful Haitians for decades.
In the days since April 24th armed civilians have killed at least 160 people believed to be gang members. And as a result, crime has plummeted. In April there were 146 murders. In May that dropped to 43.
Wow, who could have predicted that, eh?
Before the armed civilians organized, gangs would routinely kidnap civilians for ransom. They'd steal from vendors, killing those who complained. Residents told the New York Times they'd been afraid to leave their homes.
One vendor said “Before the 24th, every day someone passed by and demanded that I give him money because of my little business. If I had no money, they took whatever they wanted from my table."
Two weeks ago members of the civilian vigilante force burned alive a man believed to be a gang member, in front of her shoe stall.
But even though the vendor's life will now be better, she does the classic liberal worry: “I support vigilance groups but I don’t like the way they do it,” she said. “He could have been punished in some other way. He could have been arrested and put in jail.”
Right. Except that as in so many shit-hole nations--and Dem-ruled U.S. cities--the cops would just let him out.
The outbreak of mob justice is worrisome, experts say, because it could target people who have nothing to do with gangs. Yes it could. That's one of the reasons we have a legal system, to prevent that. But when the legal system constantly releases rapists and muggers and thieves, people eventually get tired of it.
The liberal writers at the Times bleat, "It could lead to an explosion of even worse violence if the gangs seek retribution." Yeah, well...at some point we need to find out who's more powerful, the gangs or hard-working civilians that are sick of their shit.
Nearly two years ago the last elected president was assassinated in his home and replaced by an interim prime minister widely viewed as inept. Elections have not been held since the assassination.
Last year the acting prime minister appealed for international help, but efforts by the U.S. and other nations to mount a force have stalled, largely because no country wants to lead it.
Gangs have long controlled Haiti’s poorest neighborhoods through random killings, rape and kidnappings. The violence has kept residents from being able to work or to buy food.
“Gangs are supported by some authorities, politicians and business people. At almost all levels of the police force, gangs have links with police officers, so the police don't confront the gangs they favor.”
While gang violence has dropped, gangs still control some neighborhoods and important roads, said one expert.
“The problem is the correlation between gangs and the people in power,” he said. “We don’t see any will from the authorities to improve the situation in Haiti."
And speaking of corrupt authorities: in a speech last month the acting prime minister urged citizens to lay down their weapons.
“I ask my compatriots, despite what they suffered at the hands of the bandits, to keep calm,” he said. Ya think that'll work? Nah, bro, keep up the violence until everyone left alive decides "I'm gonna work for a living and not steal or kill." See how that works for ya.
Another expert says “The people who are doing this are not criminals. They're just ordinary people who are fed up, frustrated and frightened. All they want is security, and if they have to do it themselves, they’ll do it.”
Civilians now man checkpoints, helping keep strangers out of their neighborhood by checking IDs. One teenager working a checkpoint vowed to keep up the pressure. It was necessary, he said, because the police were too afraid of the gangs.
Now: Since we're not Haiti, Democrats know this could never happen here. Never. Because Americans have now been conditioned to put up with any abuse, as Democrats running the government tell 'em "You must NOT defend yourselves! You really shouldn't even have guns. Leave law enforcement and everything like that to us, and to the police we control. Oh sure, you may be killed, but that's a small price to pay for peace, eh?"
