A question for today's Left and Dems

The WaPo and NYSlimes and "Southern Poverty Law Center" keep saying "hate crimes" by Trump supporters are increasing.  But if Trump supporters were actually committing racist "hate crimes" (a la Jussie Smollett hoax), wouldn't it be a lot easier for Democrats to report those, instead of resorting to hoaxes?
