German journalist found to have faked news stories was CNN's "journalist of the year" for 2014
Yesterday the German magazine Der Spiegel revealed that one of its
top award-winning journalists fabricated many of his articles, inventing characters, sources, and their quotes “on a grand scale” for years.
Claas Relotius, a reporter and editor, admitted to fabricating parts of at least 14 stories following the magazine’s internal investigation.
“I am sick and I need to get help,” he reportedly told the magazine.
And in a tidal wave of irony: CNN named this guy their Journalist of the Year in 2014.
You think CNN knows how to recognize plausible fake news?
But of course this was a foreign mag. No *reputable* American news organization would ever do something so reprehensible.
Well, okay, maybe Jayson Blair, fired from the New York Times, and Janet Cooke, a Washington Post reporter whose story about a child addicted to heroin won a Pulitzer Price before it was revealed to be a fabrication. And Stephen Glass, who was fired from the New Republic. But certainly we've now identified all the fakers, right?
Can't possibly be any still working for our honest, unbiased Mainstream Media, citizen. Cuz editors are trained to spot fakery right away. And surely no honest editor would let a reporter keep his or her job if he/she was discovered to be faking news, right?
