Wanna see how the national debt is rising? Consider the price of a postage stamp
For those of you who aren't fluent with maff, so don't believe our $39 Trillion national debt is a problem, here's an example that may get it across to ya:
In 1929 a first-class postage stamp cost two cents.
Two weeks ago the price of the same stamp was raised to...do you even know?
82 cents. So in 97 years it increased NOT just by merely a factor of ten or 20, but it's now 41 times more expensive than 97 years ago. Here's a plot:

1929 2¢
1936 3¢
1941 3¢
1949 3¢
1956 3¢
1963 5¢
1971 8¢
1980 15¢
1991 29¢
2001 34¢
2008 41¢
2016 47¢
2024 73¢
July 12, 2026 82¢
At the recent rate of increase, it's doubling every 12 years. And you see the result above.
Turns out our national debt is doubling even faster--about every eight to ten years. But the average American doesn't know that, and wouldn't believe it if he or she did. The history of stamp prices makes it slightly more believable.
Even if we assume the slower ten-year doubling time, we're already in a trap that's almost impossible to escape. Already our government is paying over a TRILLION dollars every year just in interest on the debt--and that number will continue to rise every year.
And since the government already spends more than it takes in in taxes, tariffs and fees, we have to borrow even the interest we have to pay on past borrowings.
SO...to have even a sliver of hope, somehow we've got to get the corrupt, terminally useless congress to cut spending. Of course they won't, because they get massive kickbacks ("campaign donations) from some of it. And domestic free shit has so many supporters. But we need to zero ALL foreign aid, and all sex-change operations, and drastically cut Medicaid.
When big, leftist-run "foundations" complain that this is awful, invite those leftist foundations to step up and use some of their billions in stored wealth to fill the gap between what the government will pay the states, and what Medicaid advocates demand.
Of course congress won't do any of those things, so the disaster becomes inevitable. Set in concrete, due to the pols' lust to stay in power.
Of course you don't believe that. Only two percent of Democrats understand compound interest and exponential growth. (If you don't believe that, try going to Wal-Mart and asking 20 radom people to explain those to ya.) And even those who believe the maff (math) don't believe the conclusion of inevitability: "Only right-wing conspiracy theorists believe this is dangerous! It's not, cuz something will intervene to prevent disaster."
And of course, depending on your definition of "disaster" the Dems may have a point: When we have to pay TWO trillion a year in interest instead of a mere ONE trillion, so are having to borrow an extra trillion a year just to pay the interest, Dems might not consider that a disaster.
And when the gummint has to offer interest rates of 8 or 10 percent to get people to loan money to the U.S, Democrat pols might not consider that a disaster.
And when, as a result of the above, the doubling time for the national debt falls from ten years to, say, five years, Democrat pols won't even notice, let alone consider it a disaster.
Tell me, Democrats: what interest rate, or amount paid in interest, do ya think is too high, eh? I'd like a number.
Of course no Mainstream "reporter" will ask that. And if one did, the answer would be "Dis all beez Trumpy's fault!!"
Wait...so it IS a problem--but only if yew kin blame Trump? Nice!
