Foundations give grants to wokie school boards to find: "Maff beez raaaacis!"

From: San Francisco Board of Ed
To: Parents of public-school students

Ten years ago we who run the San Francisco Board of Education realized that black and Latinx students were struggling with math, and had even more trouble with algebra.

A few critics said the problem was that our struggling students had never been taught basic math.  But student records confirmed that all students had passed earlier math courses with a grade of C or better, so that claim was wrong.  Instead we correctly concluded that the tests for maff math proficiency were raacist.

As compassionate liberal rulers of our city's public education system, we knew we had to do something to fix this.  So after much debate we decided the best remedy was to move algebra from middle school to the 9th grade, so students would have an extra year to become proficient in math.

We won dozens of awards from the NEA and AFT for this kind of breakthrough thinking, and all board members and school principals got well-deserved raises.

But for some reason delaying algebra a year didn't seem to help either student performance or anxiety.  Finally, after another two years of study--funded by millions of dollars in grants from liberal think-tanks and foundations and President Biden's Dept of Education--we think we've found the problem:

It's those silly numbers.

Seriously.  We found that students were confused by problems like "There are 17 students in the class.  If we want each student to get five cookies, how many cookies would we need?"  By contrast, if we replaced the numbers with "social justice" answers, like "Many boxes of cookies," every student passed.

Our early evaluations suggest this will result in all students passing algebra, which will win us many more awards.

If our full-scale trials this fall don't confirm that, we have a backup plan: We'll delay algebra until grade 12.
