Real, or impossible?
WASHINGTON D.C. (CNN)--This morning Nancy Pelosi and congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez issued a joint statement: "Every good citizen knows guns kill. And tragically, the victims are disproportionately young Persons of Color. Thus it is the position of the Democrat party that the possession of firearms by civilians must be considered a violation of the civil rights of Persons of Color.
"We good Democrats can no longer tolerate this violation of civil rights of these innocent young Persons of Color, so we have proposed a legal means of solving this. It's called the "Interstate Compact to protect our precious children," and it uses the Constitution's provision allowing states to form "compacts" for any purpose whatsoever.
This Compact would provide that in states that pass a law joining the Compact, citizens must voluntarily relinquish their guns. Of course this is totally voluntary. Then after one year any citizen caught with a firearm will be imprisoned for ten years and fined $10,000.
Republican critics have claimed that this Compact is unconstitutional, that it violates the Second Amendment. However, it's been well litigated that all amendments have limitations. For example, a ban 20 years ago on "assault weapons" was not found to violate rights. Similarly, state laws limiting ammunition clips to three bullets have been upheld. So we're sure the Supreme Court will find this sensible compact to be totally constitutional.
Also we're confident that the co-presidents and congress will approve this compact, now that we have control of both chambers of congress."
