How is New York's new "catch-and-release" program working out?

The liberals who run New York are incredibly compassionate.  And they're all about being fair.

So when "activists" and social-justice warriors came to the city's Democrat mayor complaining that the city's criminal-justice system was unfair to criminals with limited means, the mayor listened.

The complaint was that the system of releasing people charged with crimes--even those caught red-handed committing a crime--was unfair to poor criminals.

It was unfair, said the social-justice warriors, because while relatively wealthy white criminals could get released on "bond" while awaiting trial, poor criminals often couldn't afford to post bail, so had to stay in jail until their trial.  Since this took a long time, it was a huge inconvenience for criminals who were trying to pass their college classes or whatever.  You know.

But never fear, the SJW's had a "solution:"  Abolish bail for virtually every crime short of murder.  And by "abolish bail" the SJW's didn't mean keep everyone in jail til trial, but the opposite:  they demanded that even a person caught robbing a bank be released as soon as they were booked on the charge.

Communist mayor Bill de Blasio (real name Warren Wilhelm, then Warren de Blasio-Wilhelm) agreed that this was a great idea, and the new policy took effect on January 1st.

This has worked out just as well as the SJW's planned:  Every career criminal interviewed agreed that this policy removed a huge inconvenience to them.  Instead of losing income from being jailed, they could continue their criminal careers with no inconvenience.

As a result, crime in NYC since January 1st is up 22 percent over the same point in 2019.

When asked whether his new catch-and-release policy played any role in this big jump in crime, de Blasio replied "Not at all.  Only a raacist conspiracy-theorist would think such a thing."

Any reasonably intelligent person knows that if you order the cops to release career criminals, the perps aren't suddenly going to see the light and stop robbing and mugging.   Instead they'll commit more crimes--because it's easy money.

SJW's argue that these perps simply "made a mistake"--a result of poor judgment, surely.  But how many crimes does a single person need to commit before reasonable people agree that taking him off the streets will make his future victims safer?

Hard-working, law-abiding citizens know this.  Lawmakers should know this.  And yet the ghastly policy was decreed--by the communist mayor.

The policy was decreed because scum like de Blasio want votes, and love to strut and preen about how virtuous they are.  And if ordinary citizens pay the price, the Dem pols believe it's worth it.
