New York allows people charged with serious crimes to walk out of jail free. How's that working?

If you're a college student you may not know much about "bail."  When someone is charged with a crime, it can take months to go to trial.  Rather than hold the perp in jail, judges normally allow a person charged with a crime to post a cash bail, which is intended to ensure the person will show up for trial instead of fleeing.

Since lots of people don't have enough cash to post the full amount of the bail, then at the request of the perp a company that thinks the perp is not a flight risk will post the amount on their behalf.  They typically charge the perp some percentage of the bail amount do this.  Typically this is secured by the perp giving the bail bond company ten percent of the bond amount.

Of course low-income people often can't come up with the ten percent, so social-justice warriors have complained for years that the bail system is unfair to poor people!!!!

Yeah, it's just as unfair as the fact that poor people can rarely afford a Maserati.  But in the case of bail, someone who can't post bail remains jailed until trial.  And yes, that's a great hardship.

Well...with the help of irrational Democrat legislators, New York's pandering, vote-buying Dem governor (Cuomo) rammed a bill through that abolished bail for a huge range of crimes.  And by "abolished" we don't mean that you aren't allowed to post bail, but instead that...wait for it...everyone accused of all but the most serious crimes is now allowed to simply waltz out of jail, without having to post bail.

Critics pointed out that with no incentive to show up for trial, a good percentage of accused people would simply not show up.  But of course the good Democrats of New York scoffed at this notion:  They simply ignored the critics.

Hmm...wonder how that's working out?

When a two-time bank robber appeared before a New York judge, the judge deemed the guy a “menace to society” and refused to release the guy without making him post bail, defying the cool new state law that would force the judge to let him go without posting bail.

But the judge’s rational stand was short-lived, as a higher-level judge promptly reversed his order and released the accused, ordering him to wear a GPS "ankle locator."

Now, I'll bet almost everyone can guess what happened next, eh?

Yep, he immediately cut it off and vanished.

"But...but...but...not requiring bail is a GREAT idea!  Cuz it's simply NOT FAIR that some people can't afford bail, while others can!  So the solution we Dem pols rammed down your throats enacted into carefully-considered law is the right one.  And we're just SURE that most accused persons released on bail will show up for trial, cuz after all, they're honest people, right?"

"Uh...um...wait:  Are you saying crooks don't obey laws?  The deuce you say!  They're just as honest as we are, but just misunderstood victims of da eeeebil capitalist system.  Yeah, dat's it."
