Why the socialists are sweeping NYC elections
If you're not sure why socialists are winning in NY, it's because NY is already a socialist welfare state:
A staggering 25% of residents work either for the government or for a government-funded NGO.
42% of NYC residents are on Medicaid. For young Americans that's free medical care for low-income people.
20% are on food stamps ("SNAP"), which is hundreds of dollars a month in free food (amount depends on your income).
33% live in apartments where pols ORDERED that the rent can't ever be increased (euphemized as "rent-stabilized"). Members of the DSA (socialists) want the gummint to order ALL low-income housing to be "rent-stabilized.)
5% live in public housing. The city spends $5.6 BILLION per year to house low-income people: 154,000 city-owned apartments, and paying rent for 107,000 other voters in Section 8 "vouchers." In addition, there's another $1.5 BILLION a year in what they call "capital improvements." $7.8 Billion over five years, with $4.3 BILLION coming from the federal government.
And about now citizens of flyover country are wondering how New York City gets $4.3 Billion in federal money to house their residents, eh?
The housing department employs about 12,000 people.
New York City alone has a budget larger than the budget of the entire state of Florida.
New York State spends more money than Texas and Florida combined.
The loons are running the place--as they have for most of its history. The city and state are spending more than they take in, made up by the state and federal government. And that's socialism in a nutshell.
