Immigrant from Zambia, working for the USPS, stole $1.7 million in checks mailed to people on his route
Hachikosela Muchimba is a native of Zambia. From December of 2020--while not yet a U.S. citizen--he worked as a mailman for the U.S. Postal Service in D.C.
In mid-2022 he became a U.S. citizen, and continued to work for the USPS until September of 2023, when investigators found he'd stolen 98 checks mailed to people on his route.
Total value was just under $1.7 million.
He was arrested at Dulles Airport as he tried to flee back to his home country, where the top ethos is "If no one is looking, steal anything you can."
And now the topper: U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras--himself the son of immigrants--sentenced this POS to just 5 years. Cuz it wuz only about $1.7 mill, an' we iz a generous and forgiving nation when it comes to immigrants stealing us blind, eh?
What message does this send to other would-be thieves, eh?
And what the F is the Post Office doing hiring non-citizens for positions where they can steal $1.7 million? Last I heard there was a huge pool of people wanting to be hired by the P.O. cuz great pay and bennies and not much work. And yet the P.O. finds it necessary to hire non-citizens??
Anyone care to bet whether this is the only USPS mailman ("letter carrier") stealing checks?
