Which political party tried for 40 years to give women the right to vote, and which party defeated that effort--for 40 years??
One of the consistent memes pushed by the Lying Mainstream Media is that Republicans are anti-woman. As a result, it's likely that if you asked Americans which party introduced the constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote in federal elections, an overwhelming majority of Americans would guess it was the Democrats.
Wrong. Republicans first introduced the 19th amendment in 1878, but for the next 40 years Democrats in congress managed to defeat it. Republicans continued to introduce the amendment every year after that, and Democrats continued to vote it down. Only after voter revulsion with the treachery of Woodrow Wilson gave Republicans a super-majority did the 19th finally pass.
Of course today’s Democrats, knowing that our government education system long ago stopped teaching history, are confident that voters don't know the facts about the 19th. Nor do the Dems have to worry that the Lying Mainstream Media will tell the truth.
The reality is that most Democrats opposed the 19th Amendment for 40 years. The fight began in 1878, when Republican A.A. Sargent introduced it. It ended four decades later, when the GOP won landslide victories in the House and the Senate, finally giving them the votes needed to pass it.
For the first nine years after the amendment was introduced, Democrats were able to use their control to keep it from even reaching either chamber for a floor vote. Finally in 1887 it reached the floor of the Senate, where it was defeated by the Democratic majority.
Despite being re-introduced each year, Congress didn’t vote on the issue again until 1914, when it was once again defeated by senate Democrats. It was subsequently brought up for a vote in January of 1915 in the House, where it also went down. Nonetheless, the Republicans continued to push.
The big break for amendment came when President Wilson, being a typical Democrat, violated his most solemn campaign promise. Having promised to keep the U.S.out of the war in Europe that had been raging since 1914, he junked his promise and entered the war. This reversal so outraged voters that in the 1918 midterm elections voters swept the Republicans into majorities in both chambers, finally giving the GOP enough votes to pass the amendment despite Democratic opposition.
In May of 1919, Republican James R. Mann reintroduced the 19th Amendment in the House and it finally passed. The Republicans voted in favor of the amendment 200-14. The 200 GOP votes constituted a majority. Shortly thereafter a now Republican-controlled Senate also passed it, clearing the way for ratification by the states.
But Democrats continued to fight even then: Of the nine states that voted against ratification, eight had Democrat-controlled legislatures.
Once the amendment was ratified, the cunning Democrat president Wilson cleverly reversed his opposition. Indeed, he staged what was amusingly billed as a "signing ceremony"--despite the inconvenient fact that amendments don't require a president's signature.
Ttoday’s Democrats hope most women don’t know a thing about the fight for the amendment, and are counting on the media and our government education system to prevent it from being told. Dems have learned that facts and truth don't matter, just voter perception.
