New mayor of Dem-ruled San Francisco claims city's gonna stop giving out free drug works

A few years ago the politicians who rule San Francisco banned plastic straws.

Well, at least they banned regular folks from using the straws to drink a soda or lemonade.

But one group can not only get plastic straws, they get 'em for free (well, at taxpayers’ expense): The city approves plactic straws for druggies smoking fentanyl.  Seriously.

And five years ago, as more people began dying from "opioid overdoses," the city helped rent a billboard that showed glamorous partiers, with the text: “Do it with friends.” The Democrat pols were urging drug users to consume with others so friends could call 911 in case of an overdose.

For decades, the Democrat pols who run San Francisco have refused to prosecute the use of illegal drugs.  The city even gives druggies a million syringes a year--all of which end up in the gutters, as the druggies find it too much effort to put used syringes in trash cans.

The sophisticated Democrat politicians boasted that they were using a "harm reduction approach," believing more lives would be saved by helping users to consume safely than by punishing them.

But now a new mayor--Daniel Lurie, billed as a "moderate Democrat"--says things have gone too far.  He told a liberal paper he would announce a new policy that "walks back" giving druggies free aluminum foil, pipes and plastic straws--the supplies usually used to smoke fentanyl or meth.  The city was spending hundreds of thousands of tax dollars per year on those things.

So..."...walk back," eh?  Why not just write "end"?  You already know: this gives the new mayor "wiggle room," because his "new policy" will be met with howls of outrage from the Left, who scream that getting free "works" for drug use is their absolute right.  This way an insignificant reduction in the program will count as "walking back."  Nice.

“We're no longer going to sit by and allow people to kill themselves on the streets,” he said.

For years, San Francisco has handed out free crack pipes, because smoking crack or meth is believed to be safer than injections, which can transmit Hep-C and the HIV virus.

Other California cities have done the same, paid for with state dollars.  Same in Dem-ruled nirvanas like Seattle, Portland and New York City. In 2021, NYC became the first city in the U.S. to open official sites for drug users to inject illegal drugs--monitored by medical personnel--for safety, eh?

In San Francisco, "non-profit orgs" have given complete kits of drug paraphernalia to people on the street, no questions asked.  "Nonprofits" would set up tables right on the sidewalks to give away crack pipes and needles.  The mayor said he would *not* end this *outright,* but wanted to put strict conditions on it.

Ahh.  What "conditions," eh?  You won't give free works to 14-year-olds?  You'll prohibit works kits from being given away between the hours of 9am and noon?  No, here ya go, citizen:

>>As of April 30, crack pipes and needles for injection will only be distributed to those who undergo counseling sessions designed to steer them into treatment or toward other resolutions, like accepting a free bus ticket out of the city.>>

And nonprofits will only be allowed to give away crack pipes ("distribute smoking supplies") in city-approved buildings instead of on the sidewalks.

But he'll still allow nonprofits to give out clean needles on the street--cuz we're a very, *very* sophisticated city, eh?

Mr. Lurie said he didn't ban distribution altogether because like all good Democrats he still believes the "harm reduction approach" is best.  "It seeks to keep drug users alive and as healthy as possible until they are ready to accept treatment."

The leftist rag reporting this story implies that the endless rows of tents of druggies on the city's sidewalks and the gutters full of used syringes are due to the Covid pandemic.  That's a cunning lie: the sidewalks filled with druggie tents because the city refused to kick em out--and gave 'em free crack pipes and syringes, eh?

Mr. Lurie and his public health director, Daniel Tsai, said that it was a priority to get people off drugs, particularly fentanyl, which can be deadly even in tiny amounts. Since 2020 drug overdoses have killed over 3,000 people—more than Covid, murders and car crashes combined.

The new, "moderate" mayor said one of his goals was safe neighborhoods in which children and seniors do not have to wind their way through drug markets or step over unconscious people as they head to school or run errands.  So will the city roust the druggies off the sidewalks?

No.  Will the city stop giving out free syringes, or stop non-profits from giving away crack pipes.  Again, no.

The city will keep giving away drug gear because the Democrats believe that will help move more druggies into treatment. The politicians aren't exactly clear on how that will happen, since their number one priority is to ensure all IV drug users get free needles regardless.  But it *sounds* SO good!

The city will also continue to keep Narcan--a drug used to treat opioid overdose--in every police car.

A former heroin addict who runs a recovery program in the city said he's certain people as young as 16 have received free crack pipes.  Of course, citizen.  Because "harm reduction."
