How a story "evolves" as the Mainstream Media learns more; or, How to make a story vanish
I+:10: CNN--"Breaking news! Minutes ago a capitol policeman was struck and killed by an automobile driven by a white supremacist extremist terrorist. The white terrorist got out of his car with what senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reported as an AR-14 assault weapon with a 100-round magazine. He advanced on the officer, seeming about to execute him, but another officer shot the terrorist before he could carry out his plan. More information as it becomes available.
I+:20: MSNBC--"We're getting more information about the white supremacist terrorist who deliberately struck and killed a capitol police officer just 30 minutes ago. It seems the supremacist is from Indiana, and was a member of the shadowy anti-government conspiracy group Q-Anon. He was apparently a member of an obscure religious cult called the "Nation of Isom," which seems to have as one of its key beliefs that there were irregularities in last November's election and that government must be overthrown. More news as it becomes available.
I+30: CNN--"Yes Jake, my sources in the Justice Department say the white attacker was definitely an anti-government extremist. He was a climate denier and a COVID denier, and two months ago he was arrested for being in a local store without wearing a mask! Some neighbors say he was a Trump supporter. Neighbors said he was active on social media, but we haven't been able to find any accounts attributed to him. More information as it becomes available.
I+40: MSNBC--"Minutes ago the speaker of the house, Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca) said this was yet another proof that the government needs to outlaw civilian gun ownership. Popular congressional leader Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the attack shows that only government officials should be allowed to own guns and cars. She then quickly added "Only electric cars, of course."
I+50: CNN--"I'm not sure this is right, Jake, but sources tell me the shooter wasn't white after all, but was a black member of the Nation of Islam. And they added that he didn't have a gun at all, but a huge knife that looked like a gun."
CNN talking head: "Okay, thanks for that report. Meanwhile, state with Republican governors continue to endanger all Americans by allowing their states to re-opening without making their residents wear masks!"
I+8 hours: MSNBC--"Yesterday a confused person accidentally killed another person near the capitol building. Police say there was no terror connection, nor was there any reason to suspect a hate crime. Some sources reported the confused person was a member of a church. Police say no further investigation is planned.
