Dem governor and Dem leaders of Washington state are about to boot most "seasonal workers" cuz...
One of the biggest job categories for foreign workers in the U.S. is "seasonal agricultural workers." Every year tens of thousands of mostly Mexican workers do most of the harvest work on American farms. We're delighted to have them, and the money they earn puts them in the top one percent of earners in Mexico.
U.S. law specifically provides visas for these vital agricultural workers. Farmers rely on them, and they're well paid. But now a communist-run labor union has pressured the moronic Democrat governor of Washington state to send half of the foreign workers home--an act that would end up leaving half of Washington's valuable fruit to rot instead of making to grocery stores.
Washington farms produce six Billion pounds of apples per year, and large fractions of the blueberries and 75% of the raspberries grown in the U.S. The economic value is billions of dollars. But the state's Dem pols have introduced "guidelines" (read: legal sledgehammers) that would send half of the state’s essential seasonal farm workers home. Over 15,000 members of the state’s seasonal workforce would lose essential jobs because the proposed guidelines eliminate half the sleeping accommodations in temporary worker housing.
Why are the state's Dem pols targeting just seasonal foreign workers? Why only temporary workers? Why not all farm workers?
It doesn't take long to find the answer: A communist organization that's called for an end to capitalism is behind the push, supported by the United Farm Workers (UFW). "Community to Community" has been calling for an end to the guest worker program for years. They've organized protests against farmers who use seasonal workers. Those protests pressured one farm into signing a contract with the group allowing the group to take money directly from the paychecks of farm workers (just as unions do).
Now the state's top Dems have bowed to the pressure from the group, and the UFW. But farm workers are making it known they don't want this or any union taking money from their paychecks.
It appears that the state's Dem leaders are more interested in currying political favor than doing what is right for the state and nation.
