Buttigieg: We should abolish jail time for drug possession--for any drug

During an interview Monday, Dem presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg said drug possession should not result in jail time--regardless of the drug.

Here's Buttigieg:
Incarceration should not even be a response to drug possession. While there are all kinds of harms associated with drug possession and use, in trying to deal with this problem we've created an even bigger problem — a justice problem.  And that is a form of health problem when you think about the adverse aspects on a child.
We have kids in South Bend who have grown up with the incarnation of a parent as one of their first experiences. That makes them dramatically more likely to wind up themselves having an encounter with the criminal legal system.
I’ve always been skeptical of mass incarceration, but now I believe we need to [end] incarceration as a response to simple possession.”
An interviewer asked, “Is that across the board? So if its meth or coke or ecstasy, any drug if it’s possession incarceration isn’t—”

Buttigieg interjected, “That’s right.”

Now, I enjoy wine and other alcohol, and used to smoke weed, so am not opposed to all drugs, but let's review:  Pete claims that since jailing people for drug possession increases the number of kids who "wind up having an encounter with the criminal legal system," let's stop jail for drug possession.

Hey, that sounds really logical.  Seriously.  But following that reasoning, why stop there?  Why not decriminalize selling drugs too?

And theft of items with a total value of less than, say, $3000.  I mean, depriving a kid of one parent just for a crime against...well, don't Leftists claim every American has far too many things already, so how can it be a crime to, uh re-distribute some of those items?  Wouldn;t that make theft really a victimless crime?  So why jail poor people for simple theft?

And ya know, non-violent "white-collar crimes" like forgery or embezzlement are almost always covered by insurance anyway, right?  So why put a child at risk by sending people to prison for those crimes, eh?

And when you think about it, vote fraud is, like, totally non-violent, right?  And the only time it would ever make a difference is if an election was a tie, or only decided by one vote, right?  So why put the perp's children at risk for that, eh?

But we should definitely put people in prison for "hate speech," and for posting things on social media that criticize transgender people, or people who claim they have the right to own guns.  Those people are just icky.

Mayor Pete seems really cool.
