Parents sentenced to 10-to-15 years in Michigan for...

My father was the smartest man I've ever met: engineering degree, then aircraft commander of a B-17 at age 24, 35 missions over Germany, decorated for bringing the plane home with two engines shot out.  Later an instructor at the AF test pilot school.  Then a law degree.

Then a brief stint (two terms) as a state senator.  And what he told me from that experience was...state legislators are the some of the dumbest sons of bitches on the planet  He joked that they tried to repeal the law of gravity twice a month.

Now you'd think a civilization's "lawmakers" would be the best and the brightest, eh?  Yeah, no--because democracy means dumb voters often elect people as dumb as they are.  And even in congress, 80% seem to steal everything that's not tied down.  So with that depressing intro:

Michigan is a crime-ridden shithole, starting at the very top.  Yeah I'm talking about Gretch Whitmer, Dana Nessel and the rest of the gang.  It you're not from there those names won't ring any bells, but trust me for a bit.

SO...seeing school shootings in the headlines, the state's Dem "lawmakers" (man I'm starting to hate that term!) passed a "law" saying if a kid killed someone with a gun, the parents could be charged with "reckless conduct" if they bought the weapon for the kid.

I totally understand.  So a couple of years in prison if convicted, eh?   Seems reasonable.

Nah, duh "lawmakers" in Michigan wrote duh "law" so yew can be imprisoned for 15 years fo' dat.

And no voters even noticed, eh?  And duh Media--in a carefully-cultivated frenzy about school shootings--slobbered and fawned and gushed over dis faaabulous new law!

So when a 13-year-old nutter fatally shot four classmates in 2021, after the shooter was sentenced to life in prison the state used duh new law to prosecute his parents.  And last month both were sentenced by judge Cheryl Matthews to 10 to 15 years in prison--the first parents of a school shooter imprisoned for the actions of their child.

\“Parents are not expected to be psychic,” Matthews said. “But these convictions are not about poor parenting. They confirm repeated acts, or lack of acts, that could have" prevented the shootings.

At trial the parents were accused of ignoring warnings that their son had mental health issues.  Just hours before the shooting a teacher found a violent drawing on the kid’s desk.  The parents were called called to the school and told they needed to get their son into counseling.

The parents declined to take their son home in the middle of the school day, and he returned to class.  Later he came out of a bathroom with gun in hand and fired 30 rounds.

With that as background:  Obviously everyone is horrified by school shootings, and in the U.S. pressure has been mounting to punish parents who give their children guns.  But ten-to-15 years seems way excessive.

The other problem I have with this law is that it will NOT be applied equally to all races.  Parents (or parent) of Jamal or D'Andre or Shitavious will never be charged, in Michigan or anywhere else, cuz "disparate impact" or racism or similar.

This sentence was the State punishing two white parents to prevent others from giving their kids guns.  It's grotesquely excessive, but that's the way "lawmakers" write "laws."
