Brief history lesson for young Americans

The Founders (for young Americans: "the founding fathers") were really smart: They knew the average person--even though many were good and earnest and hard-working--wasn't necessarily educated or smart.

Knowing this, they set up our government NOT as a pure democracy, but as a "democratic republic," in which people voted for "representatives" who we would hope were smarter and well educated, and thus could resist stupid-ass policies pushed by stupid people (including many elected politicians) to enrich themselves.

See, the problem with a pure democracy is that corrupt pols know that lazy leeches will always vote for whoever promises to give them more "free shit."  Over time, giving "free" stuff to voters bankrupts the government.  Every government.  

Interestingly, this iron-clad tendency was spotted at least two centuries ago (if not two millennia ago).  The guy said

A pure democracy can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves [free shit] from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most [free shit], with the result that a democracy always collapses.  And that's always followed by a dictatorship.

Now, just as an aside for my students: communism takes this tendency--of many people to demand free stuff--one better, by declaring as its founding principle that every citizen is entitled to everything he or she "needs," and that those needs must be paid for by those who are better off.

Is that faaaabulously seductive or what/

The actual saying--from Marx himself--is "From each according to his ability, *to each* according to his need."

Not surprisingly, that slogan has a huge appeal to lazy people--and cunning grifters--since they realize that by supporting communism they can *both* drag the rich down to their level, and reap loads of free stuff.

Such a deal, eh?

And every few years some socialist pol in some shithole country spouts this same siren song--and gets elected!  Examples: Hugo Chavez in Venezuela.  And after he died, his hand-picked thug VP (Maduro) took over, and has continued the scam.

In 20 years Venezuela went from having the highest per-capita income in Latin America to starvation.  Literally.  Citizens were killing and eating zoo animals.  Literally.

The New York Times and WaPo positively creamed themselves when Chavez took over, and then Maduro.  "Dis SO cool!" they gushed.  "Duh po' oppressed pipo of Venezuela are now FREE of their oppressors!"  Then when it predictably turned to shit every lying liberal POS media outlet totally ignored it.

"Venezuela?  Whut dat?  Nevah heard of it!"

The only U.S. paper to report on what was  actually happening in Venezuela was the Miami Herald, because so many Venezuelan refugees lived in Miami.

Oh wait...you don't believe any of that!  Ah, in that case carry on, citizen!
