Portland District Attorney won't charge any of the "mostly peaceful protesters"
Riot-torn Portland is in Multnomah County, where leftist District Attorney Mike Schmidt is having a press conference:
DA Schmidt: My office will drop most of the charges filed against protesters in the mostly peaceful protests in Portland. Specifically, we won’t charge demonstrators accused of minor nothings like interfering with police, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, escape or harassment, as long as the allegations against these peaceful protesters don’t involve “deliberate’’ property damage, theft or force against another person or threats of force.
Reporter: So what happens if a "peaceful protester" throws a brick at a mass of police and it hits one of 'em and injures him? Would you charge that person?
DA Schmidt: Certainly. Police who interfere with people peacefully exercising their free speech rights should be charged and punished.
Reporter: Um...I meant would you charge the person who threw the brick?
DA Schmidt: No, because if the protester merely lobbed the object at a *mass* of police, there would be no threat to a single individual, nor force used against a single person. It's really quite simple.
2nd reporter: Would your office charge a "protester" who barricaded the doors of the courthouse and started a fire against the wall of the building, with people inside?
DA Schmidt: No, because there's no danger. See, fires are merely symbols of protesters' anger with our racist, capitalist system--like burning an American flag, which was ruled totally legal by our Supreme Count.over 20 years ago. And fire can't burn through the concrete outer wall. So again, no force or threat or "deliberate damage to property." I mean, it'll leave marks on the wall but that's no worse than spray painting "Fuck the police" on the courthouse--and everyone recognizes that as simply an exercise of a citizen's cherished First Amendment rights, which we all support.
3rd reporter: Would you charge a protester who threw a rock through the window of your house at [address redacted]?
DA Schmidt: Oh, look at the time! CNN is interviewing me across town in a few minutes, so I've gotta run!
